Most of the time in this column I like to tell about my past week and all the activities and experiences I may have had that you might find interesting. I truly enjoy writing them and normally I try to keep them light and maybe humorous. However, sometimes I have to bring up an issue that might be of a sensitive matter. Believe me, I try not to be an ogre about things, but when it affects your faith life and maybe those of others, I need to speak out.
The other day as I stood outside of Church greeting people entering Mass, I couldn't believe my eyes at the amount of people coming in late. I don't mean one or two minutes, but 15, 20, and even 30 minutes late. I realize that it happens on occasion, I get it. Sometimes I wonder how large families with small children get here at all. But, as I look out, it seems it is always the same ones who are late to Mass and then leave early. I say this because of the importance of the event that is about to happen. One wouldn't go to a musical or show missing the first 15 or 20 minutes and try to figure out what's going on. The same issue would apply to Mass. How does one get into the spirit of the readings and homily to see what God is trying to tell me this week if I come in mid-ceremony? God is putting on a meal for us and we disrespect Him by coming in late? It's the same when Mass is ended. Many leave before God can even say good-bye with His blessing. What's even worse, we are teaching our children to do the same thing by leaving early. Again, sometimes events happen when this might be necessary, I get it. But, all the time? Remember, we are here for at most an hour to thank God for His wonderful generosity to us and we can't even wait for him to give us his blessing? It's like leaving a dinner party after eating without saying goodbye to the host or hostess. It's rude!
Ok, I know I may be ridiculed by some for the above writing and that's fine. I'm here to challenge you in your faith and help you to understand the importance of following Christ. I don't judge and I will not police the activity. I just want you to know what you're doing and how it might affect your spiritual life and those of others. I hope this helps.
I guess I have said enough but I hope you understand that it is all done in love. Passion for Christ can change the world. I pray that you all can play a part in it.
