Even though he is no longer walking around on earth as he was 2,000 years ago, there are many different ways that we can encounter Jesus today.
As Catholics, we meet him most profoundly in the Eucharist, where he is present Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. We can also encounter Jesus in the Scriptures, remembering that Jesus is the Word, according to John 1:1. Many people see God in nature: "Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made." (Romans 1:20).
Perhaps the most common way that we can encounter Jesus is through other people, whether that is a priest who is acting
in persona Christi as he celebrates Mass or hears confessions, someone who is in need and therefore represents Christ in a profound way (according to Matthew 25:31-46), or really any human being who has been made "in the image of God" (Genesis 1:27). Jesus speaks to us in times of prayer and silence, and particularly through the guidance of a well-formed conscience. As the old Baltimore Catechism proclaims, "God is everywhere."
