There are many people who, for various reasons, don't believe in God. It is important for us to always remember that we cannot judge what is in someone else's heart. We do know that God still loves them and still wants them to be with him forever in Heaven. (And it is always possible that, in some mysterious way that we do not understand, God may act to save someone who never had the opportunity to come to know him.) But this is why it is so important for us to share the Gospel and talk about Jesus with people we know. St. Paul tells us "For 'everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach?" (Romans 10:13-14) It is up to us to preach the Good News to everyone! If you want to know more about what the Church teaches on this, read paragraphs 836-856 in the
Catechism.
