The parish community of St. Mark the Evangelist invites members of the assembly who are qualified (registered members who have received First Communion) to accept the privilege and responsibility of proclaiming the Word of God at Mass as Readers.
The Reader should be a person of prayer who reflects frequently on the words of Scripture, engages in ongoing formation in the study of spirituality, scripture, liturgy, and technical skills, and seeks to live and proclaim the Word of God in everyday life.
Completion of a two evening orientation process in liturgy, the liturgical year, the structure of the Mass, an understanding of the lectionary and the principles of harmony and semi-continuous reading, praying with the Scriptures, and the practical aspects of being a Reader at St. Mark’s is required before being assigned to read at Mass.
Orientation sessions are provided annually in February, May, August, and November. Quarterly schedules are published with Reader assignments and opportunities for ongoing formation are provided. More information can be found in the Guidelines for the Ministry of Reader established by St. Mark’s.
